Has anybody solution to Garbage Mountains and Garbage Slides ?
The politicians in the national capital including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal looked much concerned on Garbage Mountain at Ghazipur which causes death of two persons on Friday. However, it was reported as ‘collapse of landfill’ but the scene on the ground looked like ‘garbage slide’ on the pattern of ‘land slide’ in Himalayan region.
In fact this was waiting to happen for long and more such incidents can’t be ignored. In a politically correct statement, Kejriwal cunningly passed the buck to the MCDs but he too don’t have any solution to this problem. Delhi generates around 8,000 to 10,000 metric tonnes of garbage per day but there is no space to dump it. The three major land fill sites – Okhla, Bhalaswa and Ghazipur are filled beyond capacity. There is no place for land fill sites in the city. Earlier, Delhi Development Authority had allocated land for over two dozen small land fill sites for segregation and disposal of the municipal waste but the residents of the region came out in protest. The all opposed garbage sites in their locality due to the foul smell. An effort was made by MCDs and Delhi Government to make land fill sites in NCR regions of Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh. However, they could not succeed due to the protest of the citizens.
AAP government blames MCDs for the mess but they don’t have any solution to suggest. What will they do? Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal had promised to shut down Okhala landfill to the residents due to foul smell there but he could not. There is no alternative. In fact no one want the garbage of the city around his residents, rout to office, school, or hospital but everybody want the garbage to be cleaned.
The MCDs have made some efforts of segregating building debris and municipal waste. This mechanism had worked and they started making bricks by compressing the building debris. The electricity plant is in operation at Okhla for making electricity from garbage. Similar projects are being made at Ghazipur and Bhalswa. Garbage Mountains say Mount Garbage and Garbage slide but given the huge amount of municipal waste generated in Delhi this option has its limitations.
The government should explain these difficulties to the citizens and form a policy with their active cooperation. There is great need of segregation, recycling and reuse of the waste.
